Medea and Jason from Ovid's Metamorphoses

Mon Oct 5, 2009, 10:25 PM
"...What power can cause such fear?
There is a fire in your untried heart,
poor wretched girl! Dislodge it if you can!
I'd act more sanely, if I only could,
but this new power overwhelms my will;
reason advises this, and passion, that;
I see the better way, and I approve it,
while I pursue the worse."

If you have any interest in Greco-Roman mythology I would definitely recommend reading Ovid's Metamorphoses. He's a very clever writer. Also, strongly recommend the new translation by Charles Martin. He captures the essence delightfully. There are some really funny parts, and some exceptionally beautiful parts, but this chunk has just been pressing in my brain all day and I needed to write it our or something to try and dislodge it.

Another Phantom rant

Fri Sep 11, 2009, 3:30 PM
Every wondered why when most phan girls draw Erik they give him really lustrous hair? They have no problem with is facial deformities that make him look like a corpse, but heaven forbid he have male-pattern-baldness! Despite what they would like to believe, they're all still giving signs of the shallowness of which they accuse Christine.

Which also sort of pisses me off, come to think of it. Yes, Christine was frightened by his face. You know what else frightened her? The fact that this insane man had been living beneath the theatre for who knows how many years. And probably also that he had been obsessively stalking her, manipulating her, and controlling her. And it probably didn't help that he had a torture chamber, had killed a well-liked stage hand (and who knows who all else), and just violent tendencies in general. But you know what would probably scare me most if I were Christine? Oh, probably the part where, after she removes the mask, he starts screaming and wailing and cursing and dragging her around on the floor by her hair and then taking her fingernails and forcing her to dig them in to the flesh of his face and then drag them down until he was bleeding and then dropping to the floor and dragging himself on his belly in to the next room to weep.

I gatta say, being trapped in the deepest, darkest, reaches of the theatre where no one was ever likely to find m, in that particular situation just might be a bit of a turn off.

Just sayin'.

Don't get me wrong. I adore Erik and his story is my all time favorite horror/mystery/romance ever. But I've got to be realistic. And I HATE IT when people try to change the story. It's PERFECT. Candyfluff happy stories suck. But then, so do abismal, morbid, kill off all the characters stories. There has to be a balance and Phantom of the Opera has it.

Really, it's even debatable that it has a happy ending. They young, beautiful heroine runs away with the handsome, rich love of her life, of course. Which is a happy ending out of context. But the really happy part is that Erik learns to be human. It's heart-wrenching and tragic but his love for Christine finally transformed him from being a monster and a madman to being a poor wretched human in love. And when this happened, he was human enough to let her go. He loved her so much that he wanted to give her the life she deserved and he gave it to her. And that is the beautiful, happy tragedy of it.

Gosh. Seriously. One of the best story lines ever written.

TWENTY - What should you be doing right now?: doing homework, writing an essay, taking a test...

TWENTY ONE - Do you have a crush on anyone right now?: I like to think that I've gotten to old to have "crushes". I become besotted or perhaps "twitterpated". But the answer is still no either way.

Honestly, what are you doing right now?: procrastinating

I wasn't tagged.

Sun Jun 7, 2009, 11:49 PM
:icontelleroftales: did NOT tag me. Therefore, I was inclined to do this.

Here are the rules:

{1}.Post these rules
Check.

{2}.Each tagged person must post 8 things about themselves on their journal.
Right-o.

{3}.At the end you have to choose 8 people to tag, and post their icons on the same journal.
Screw you.

{4}.Go to their page and send a message saying you tagged them. ;P
Heck no.

{5}.NO tag-backs.
Very well.

1. I think licorice flavored gum is completely wrong.
2. Mustaches are the anti-sexy unless you happen to be Westley.
3. Not even the Goblin King can pull off a mullet. They're worse than mustaches.
4. I've lately become very fond of goatees and short scruffy beards.
5. And every time I think about it I feel the need to quote Beatrice from Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing: "He who has a beard is more than a youth, and he who has no beard is less than a man. And he who is more than a youth is not for me and he who is less than a man... I am not for him."
6. I've lately become obsessed with the "smokey-eyes" look and have started wearing WAY too much eye makeup.
7. My mom bought me gummy vitamins to take with me to school because she knows I won't take the pill kind. They are delicious. I'm afraid I may over-dose.

and finally, without further ado,

8. I. Like. Chocolate. Milk.
